Overview
Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (12 August 1892 – 27 September 1972) was an Indian mathematician and visionary librarian who transformed librarianship from a clerical job into an academic discipline. Widely recognized as the "Father of Library Science in India," he introduced groundbreaking classification concepts and principles that continue to define library management and digital indexing globally.
His academic foundations in mathematics gave him a unique perspective on metadata, taxonomy, and faceted structures. This led to his two most influential contributions: the Five Laws of Library Science and the Colon Classification System.
The Five Laws of Library Science (1931)
Ranganathan formulated his famous five laws in 1931. These simple, elegant principles serve as a philosophical framework for library systems and are considered timeless instructions for information systems:

Colon Classification (Faceted Taxonomy)
In 1933, Ranganathan published the Colon Classification system. Unlike the standard
linear decimal classifications of the era, Ranganathan developed a faceted
classification structure using the colon symbol (:) as a link. He broke
subjects down into five fundamental categories, known by the acronym PMEST:
- Personality (P) — The core or most specific subject object.
- Matter (M) — The physical material or substance of the subject.
- Energy (E) — The processes, operations, activities, or actions.
- Space (S) — The geographical location or spatial element.
- Time (T) — The chronological period, era, or date.
This faceted design allowed infinite combinations and is widely considered a foundational precursor to modern relational databases, faceted web search navigation, and search query architectures.
